Tomb Raider is one of the biggest video game franchises of all time. It’s been a massive hit since it debuted in 1996, and Lara Croft has become one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. It’s been six years since the last AAA adventure came out, but a new game is officially in-development. A Tomb Raider RPG is planned for 2025, and its artwork shows more of unified Lara Croft planned for the leaked “open-world” game said to be set in India.
Although we haven’t had a new Tomb Raider adventure since the release of Shadow in 2018, Lara Croft has been extremely busy appearing in the worlds of other video games. She’s been part of Call of Duty and Fortnite, she’s also been in Magic The Gathering, and she’s recently become a survivor in Dead By Daylight. In addition, she’s getting a Netflix anime series planned for October.
All of the above collaborations were fantastic, but fans are naturally craving a new Tomb Raider game rather than more collaborations. Fortunately, a new game is in development, and an upcoming RPG provides another look at unified Lara Croft.
New Tomb Raider RPG shows more unified Lara Croft artwork
A new Tomb Raider role-playing board game called the Crypt of Chanos is planned to come out in “early 2025”. It has just joined Kickstarter, and you can sign up to be notified on launch.
While a new board game is exciting, what’s notable is that the artwork is another look at unified Lara Croft. This is a version of the British heroine that has appeared prominently in collaborations with Call of Duty and Magic The Gathering. Earlier this year, Crystal Dynamics also showed a “unified vision” of Lara Croft for her next video game adventure, and it was consistent with the board game and her appearances in CoD and MotG.
There were some critics of the “unified vision” found below, and this reportedly resulted in sources working on the upcoming new game to clarify that the image “does not correspond” to the final design for Lara Croft (via gamesradar).
While it may not be the definitive design, it seems that the “unified vision” will be very close to the final product as it was featured in video game collaborations and is the cover art for the 2025 Tomb Raider RPG. The face may be slightly different, but it seems almost certain we’re getting dual pistols back along with cargo shorts, tank top, and braid.
A new Tomb Raider AAA game is in-development at Crystal Dynamics, and what we officially know is that it is using Unreal Engine 5 and will be published by Amazon Games. We also know that it takes place after Tomb Raider Underworld, and that it is a unified Lara Croft where Tomb Raider 2013 to Shadow is the canon origin.
As for leaks, vthescooper exclusively reported in May that the next game is “open-world” and set in India. The story reportedly involves a natural disaster in “Northern India revealing ancient emperor Ashoka’s ruins and artifacts”. This prompts Lara to race “against a Society of Raiders and other rivals for these powerful relics”.
In addition to this short snippet of the basic plot, vthescooper also claimed it will feature “vast sceneries, free use of the motorcycle, parachute, and common Lara traversal methods to unrestrictedly navigate across a big map and its challenges”.
None of the above leaks from vthescooper are official as of writing. All that’s confirmed so far is that the new game utilizes Unreal Engine 5, stars a unified Lara Croft after Tomb Raider Underworld, and is being published by Amazon Games.
It’s not confirmed that a reveal will happen this year, but fans are hopeful that there will be teaser come Tomb Raider’s anniversary in October. Either that or fans are hopeful there will be teaser presented at this year’s Game Awards ceremony.
