For those awaiting the return of classic funky aliens Toejam & Earl, it’s been a long wait for news on the Kickstarted sequel. However, developer HumaNature Studios has now revealed that it hopes to finally realease Toejam & Earl: Back in the Groove in Fall 2018 as per a press release issued yesterday.

Toejam & Earl: Back in the Groove is a 2D roguelike continuation of the classic 90s Sega Mega Drive series succesfully backed on Kickstarter back in 2015 and orginally set to launch in 2016. In August of that year but the game was delayed and publisher Adult Swim was brought on to help bring the game to additional platforms.

However, the press release notes that HumaNature has decided to end its partnership with Adult Swim after the publisher decided to push the title back for some of its other titles, with T&J creator Greg Johnson saying ‘Going forward Adult Swim Games is no longer going to be our publisher. Instead we are going back to self-publishing.’

‘I’d like to say how deeply grateful I and all of us here at HNS are to Adult Swim Games. We wouldn’t have gotten this game to this point without them…seriously. Thank You Adult Swim!!’

The game itself is set to go into an early access beta for backers very soon, and HumaNature say the Nintendo Switch version is just about ready to be submitted for certification, so it doesn’t look like the game’s release is too far away at all. In the meantime, here’s a trailer:
