Telltale Games has announced that eagerly awaited gritty fairy tale adventure sequel The Wolf Among Us 2 will not make its originally announced release date of 2023.

The studio made the announcement on Twitter to fans, and further explained the reasons behind the delay in an interview with IGN.

On Twitter, the statement read: “We’ve made the difficult decision to delay The Wolf Among Us 2 out of 2023. We know, it’s frustrating to hear.”

“We started work on this in 2020, and we’re still determined to tell the ongoing story of Bigby and the rest of the Fabletown gang. However, it is going to require more time.”

More explanation was given in the IGN interview, where Telltale’s CEO Jamie Ottilie explained the decision was partially due to a change in engine – from Unreal 4 to Unreal 5 – and also putting the health of the team first.

“If we put this game out and it’s not ready, we’re going to get torn to shreds. The expectations are pretty high, and we want time to meet those and we want to be proud of it and know that ‘Hey, this is the best game we could have made’.

“I’ve done [crunch], and I don’t want to do it again, and it’s not fair to ask it it,” he continued. “You can’t plan a business around it. So yeah, part of it is maintaining a healthy work culture.”

“We don’t want to burn out our good people – it has been incredibly difficult to recruit the last two years between COVID and the labor markets and the growth in the games industry. So certainly, burning people out or grinding them down is the wrong thing to do long-term. It’s not how you build a business.”

The Wolf Among Us 2 was originally announced during the 2019 Game Awards, but went relatively quiet after its original announcement – and of course the global pandemic – which meant we didn’t hear about it again until around this time last year.

Then we were told it will release episodically – as the original game did under Telltale’s previous guise – but this time only after every episode is already complete, meaning the time between episodes should be much shorter and more consistent.

At the time, it was pencilled in for a 2023 release, but a specific period wasn’t given. Likewise, a new date has not been set for the new release, so for now fans will have to wait and see when they can hear more from Bigby Wolf and the land of Fables.

In the meantime, the next Telltale adventure will be based on Amazon sci-fi series The Expanse, set to launch at some point later this year.
