Asymmetrical multiplayer horror game The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is out now, announced by developer Gun. The game is set to allow fans of the much-beloved horror movie to live out their worst nightmares as either one of the survivors or break havoc as one of the game’s killers.

The game will pit a team of survivors – or victims – against several members of the murderous Sawyer family from the movies – including the family’s most infamous member: Leatherface.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre release date

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will launch on August 18 2023, for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC.

It’ll also release via Xbox Game Pass on both Xbox consoles and PC from day one, meaning subscribers will be able to download and play for no extra charge.

The entire Slaughter Family is set to make an appearance in the game, including the following:

  • Leatherface
  • The Cook
  • The Hitchhiker
  • Grandpa
  • Sissy
  • Johnny

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Maps

There are currently only three maps set to release with the game. Sumo Digital lead designer Steve Kirby noted, “When choosing and designing the levels, we knew we wanted players to really experience the iconic locations from the original movie as well as add our own stamp on the franchise. These are key locations for the Family and their Victims and it would not be The Texas Chain Saw Massacre without them”. The maps available at launch include:

  • Family House
  • Gas Station
  • Slaughterhouse

Will The Texas Chain Saw Massacre have offline play?

Unfortunately, Sumo Digital has confirmed that The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will not have offline play with or without bots. The developer confirmed they didn’t even consider bots when making The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The studio said in an interview with MP1st, “We learned a lot from Friday the 13th and the time that is required to make a feature like that. Believable bots in games are incredibly time consuming and difficult to do well. This would have cut our main game features back dramatically, thus impacting the overall experience we wanted to create.”

The gory game is actually set as a prequel to the classic 1974 movie – with the playable characters being those who left the abandoned camp the film’s poor protagonists stumbled across.

An unrated gameplay trailer for the game was shown off last June – you can check that out over here.
