While all eyes have been on Naughty Dog’s upcoming The Last of Us multiplayer game and a possible third entry in the singleplayer series, it appears that the game’s composer, Gustavo Santaolalla, has hinted at a possible PlayStation 5 version of The Last of Us Part 2.

Speaking on the Argentina-based BLENDER podcast, Santaolalla was speaking on his cameo in The Last of Us Part II. For those who don’t remember, Santaolalla could be seen at the Jackson settlement playing the banjo. While you couldn’t interact with him during this cameo, Santaolalla noted in the interview with BLENDER that, “in the new editions you can make me play certain themes and, well, I can’t say anything else”.

There’s no information outside of this comment. However, fans have been speculating as to whether this comment is in reference to a possible cameo in the unannounced The Last of Us Part 3 or if this means players are set to get another version of The Last of Us Part 2, similar to the upgrade The Last of Us Part 1 remake got. Fans of the series have taken to the ResetEra forums to voice their support with one player saying, “A re-release of one of the best games of all time would be an insta-buy.”

One player speculated that a possible rerelease of the game could see the addition of a Left Behind style expansion as part of a Director’s Cut package. They said, “Ha, interesting. Is there any chance he’s actually talking about a TLOU3? If they actually are going back and changing content in TLOU2, it would make me wonder if they actually have a Left Behind style expansion coming as a part of the Director’s Cut package.”

As mentioned, there’s no further confirmation on what Santaolalla is referencing but given The Last of Us Part 1 was remade just in time for the release of The Last of Us on HBO, it’s certainly possible the second game could also receive the same treatment in the lead up to the show’s second season. However, this is all speculation at this point.
