GenDesign, the Japanese studio behind The Last Guardian, has released a teaser image of its next game.

The abstract image appears on the developer’s website, in a post celebrating 2021, and depicts a lone, cloaked figure stood next to a giant edifice of some sort. Given that GenDesign is comprised of developers who previously worked on Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, the stark, vaguely mournful image is no surprise.

Not much is known about the new game. It has been revealed and teased before, with one image bearing a biomechanical edge, and the studio’s head, Fumito Ueda, has spoken about how the new game rivals the studio’s older releases in terms of scope: “What we’re making now doesn’t feel like an indie game.”

That was from an interview with Famitsu, in which Ueda also said that the new game wasn’ a sequel (“This will be a completely new title, not a sequel”).

A direct sequel, perhaps not, but anyone familiar with Ueda’s game will know that, while they aren’t explicit sequels, per se, they all bear a spiritual connection—and share a world.

Could this teaser mean that GenDesign’s new game will be on its way in 2021? Probably not, but you never know.
