Although Nexon’s looter shooter has steadily climbed back from the depths of its disastrous launch over the past few weeks, controversy surrounding the game is rearing its ugly head again. This time, The First Descendant is being accused of plagiarism again after the developers recently shared an image of the game’s upcoming character, Luna, using what looks to be a replica of Lucio’s gun from Overwatch 2 as her weapon.
In a recent announcement on X (formerly Twitter), Nexon revealed an alternative swimsuit cosmetic for Luna, accompanied by a short blurb teasing her vocal chops. The post also included an image of the outfit in question, which sees the upcoming Descendant holding a megaphone-like gun reminiscent of Lucio’s own sound-producing weapon. In addition, another eagle-eyed X user pointed out that Luna’s swimsuit cosmetic look seems to imitate that of a Marvel Super War character: Luna Snow.
Now, if this were the game’s first accusation of plagiarism, it might be forgiven by the community as a small oversight. Unfortunately, it isn’t. During the game’s first few weeks, Nexon had been accused of copying in-game icons from Destiny 2. The subsequent outrage following this revelation forced the game’s developers to send out a statement to Forbes’ Paul Tassi, stating that they’ll be making adjustments to their imagery.
Of course, there’s always the chance this could be a coincidence, no matter how unlikely. Since The First Descendant only revealed Luna’s swimsuit cosmetic recently, Nexon has yet to issue a statement regarding these latest claims of plagiarism. But with criticism towards its liberal use of other games’ assets mounting again, the developers could make an announcement sooner rather than later.
