Earlier this week, YSNet released the first teaser trailer for Shenmue III on the PS4. It was interesting to see that Shenmue III was actually real, but what was quite concerning were the characters in the trailer. Specifically, the whole dead behind the eyes look to everyone. Thankfully this lifeless affliction is only temporary according to YSNet founder, Yu Suzuki.

Speaking to Game Spark (translated via Gematsu), Suzuki said that the character models are currently incomplete and what we saw of the characters in the trailer is not representative of the finished game, ‘Shenhua, Ryo, and the other characters are mostly temporary, Shenhua still has to be fixed up a bit,’ explained Suzuki.

Suzuki also discussed the lack of expression in characters faces. Speaking to Game Watch, he said this was due to time constraints saying that, ‘Facial expressions were implemented a month ago, but were temporarily removed’. Panic over then? We were all getting a little worried after seeing those glass-eyed, twirling marionettes going through the motions in an admittedly eye-catching variety of environments.

Some more details have also been revealed, with Suzuki saying that Shenmue III will be a single-player experience that should be around 30-hours long. Shenmue III will have a new fighting system which has been built from the ground up. This is a change from the previous games where the fighting engines from Virtua Fighter’s 1-and-2 were used for the game’s combat. Suzuki was keen to note that he didn’t see Shenmue III as a fighting game, saying that it’s a game based around a player’s ‘thought and judgement’. So, basically it’s an RPG that happens to have fighting.

Shenmue III is due to release in 2018 for the PS4 and PC. It was recently announced that Deep Silver would be publishing the game internationally.
