It is no secret that Helldivers 2 is heavily inspired by the likes of Starship Troopers, the 1959 sci-fi book and 1997 movie of the same name that sees the world’s soldiers fight alien creatures in space. Fighting against the Terminids feels like you’re playing “Starship Troopers: The Game.” But many people aren’t aware that many games from the franchise exist already, with some being recent and still active today.

One of these games is Starship Troopers: Extermination, a 16-player co-op FPS that sees the soldiers take on hordes of alien creatures. Although it currently has mixed reviews on Steam, it has started to gain some popularity due to the developers plans to update the game to help it rival Helldivers 2.
When watching the trailer for Starship Troopers: Extermination it is clear how much inspiration Helldivers 2 took from the series, but there are plenty of changes to set it apart. The first-person style looks to be a great change of pace and makes the movement seem much faster. The game also features classes for your character, this was also an idea that was planned for Helldivers 2 before being scrapped due to time constraints. But, the best change is that it can be played with up to 16-players on one map as opposed to four.
The main thing that will always set Helldivers 2 apart from Starship Troopers is the addition of multiple enemy factions rather than being just focused on the alien Terminids. But with the constant nerf of weapons and changes that have turned a lot of players away, this could be a great opportunity for Starship Troopers: Extermination to gain some ground, not to mention they can snap up many of the players unable to play due to the PSN restriction.
