Two teenage Pokemon GO players in their car were shot at in Florida by a man who believed the pair were burglars, reports News4jax.

And not the suspicious Burglar class Pokemon trainer, but real life burglars who go around stealing stuff from people.

The householder who shot at the teenagers said he had earlier heard them say “did you get anything”?

In the context of Pokemon GO they were obviously chatting about potential caught pocket monsters, but it’s easy to see why someone could believe they were talking about stolen goods. What’s not so easy to understand is why the man opened fire, but hey ho.

The teenagers were unharmed and are able to continue hunting for Pokemon.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has now issued Pokemon GO guidelines to ensure players stay safe.

They advise players to:

  • Be alert at all times and stay aware of their surroundings
  • Not to drive, ride a bike or skateboard while playing
  • Not to trespass, or go on to private property while playing
  • Be aware of “Pokestops” where players could fall victim to crime

They advise parents to:

  • Talk to their children about strangers and set limits on where they can go
  • Be aware of third-party software apps claiming to enhance the gaming experience – because many allow access to sensitive personal data
