Super Smash Bros. was surprisingly absent from Nintendo’s pre-E3 media briefing and didn’t appear on the show floor yesterday either. Considering the Wii instalment of the series was supposedly set to be a launch title, this was somewhat disappointing.

It seems Nintendo did have at least one surprise left up its sleeve though, as Super Smash Bros. Brawl was announced at a press event yesterday evening. Sadly, the game isn’t going to make launch, and will ship at some point in 2007, but if reaction around the gaming community is anything to go by, that doesn’t matter.

The trailer shown at the press event featured familiar characters such as Pikachu, Kirby, and Mario, but also brand new characters such as Wario, Kid Icarus, Meta Knight, Zero Suit Samus (Samus from Metroid without her power armour) and one rather unexpected guest.

The trailer ended with Solid Snake, of Metal Gear Solid fame, talking to Otacon via the Codec communicator. Snake said that he was on a recon mission, before a box was seen in the Super Smash Bros. Brawl game world – a trademark of the Metal Gear Solid series. Snake then proceeded to come out of cover and revealed himself to the other characters fighting. When the lights came back on after the presentation Shigeru Miyamoto was on stage with industry veteran Masahiro Sakurai, who is handling Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

We’ll try and get more information on the game from Nintendo at Day 2 of E3, but you can be sure to expect more on the game in the coming months.
