Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is considered by fans to be one of the best classic Mario games, and a remake has finally been announced.

Revealed during the June Nintendo Direct, Super Mario RPG Remake is coming to Nintendo Switch on 17 November 2023. Originally released on the SNES in 1996, Super Mario RPG was the precursor to the Paper Mario series, which last saw a release in 2020 with The Origami King.

The preview kicked off with a look at the original game’s intro, decorated with its classically pixelated design. However, it would soon transition into today’s modern recreation, which has retained its original isometric perspective, but it looks much cleaner now, with the ol’ HD touch-up and some lovely lighting effects. Viewers also got a sneak peek of the game’s simple, yet highly nostalgic turn-based combat that old school gamers had long been asking for.

With all of these elements showcased during the event, fans couldn’t help but express their excitement at seeing the remake finally announced for the Switch. One user commenting under the official trailer said that they “still remember beating this game for the first time as a ten-year-old and calling my brother downstairs because I was so excited. My first RPG.” Another commenter simply noted that they “did not see this one coming,” but they’re still “really looking forward to this remake.”

Pre-orders go live later today on the eShop, but you may be stuck waiting for a while before you can play it as it’s set to release on November 17, 2023. But with Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars being one of the most beloved entries in the Super Mario franchise, players undoubtedly wouldn’t mind staying patient a few months more as this is a welcome surprise that many hadn’t initially been expecting.
