Nintendo has announced plans to release a selection of classic Wii titles on Wii U via digital download.

From today, Wii U players will be able to download Super Mario Galaxy 2 directly from the Wii U eShop, with Donkey Kong Country Returns releasing next Thursday, January 22, and Metroid Prime Trilogy on January 29.

All three games will be available for £8.99 each during their first week of release, with the price rising to £17.99 after.

Nintendo says that the Wii U GamePad can be used to control “many” Wii games that were previously compatible with the Wii Classic Controller. Unfortunately, however, none of the initial three games appear to be compatible with it.

There doesn’t appear to have been any visual improvements made to the games, either. Don’t pick up Super Mario Galaxy 2 suddenly expecting to see it running in HD.

Other upcoming titles planned for release digitally on Wii U include Kirby’s Adventure Wii, Pandora’s Tower, Sin & Punishment: Successor of the Skies and Punch-Out, although release dates have yet to be announced.
