Despite the controversy surrounding its launch, the accomplishments of Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Studios’ fantastical Wizarding World RPG, Hogwarts Legacy, can’t be denied. After all, it broke viewership records for single-player games on Twitch during its early access period and sold millions of copies within a few weeks of its release. So, it stands to reason that the game’s publisher is prioritizing a sequel to capitalize on the first game’s roaring success.

At least, that’s according to Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels during an interview at Bank of America’s recent 2024 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference (per Variety). During this, he said, “Obviously, a successor to Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road.” “So there is certainly a significant growth contribution from that [games] business in our strategic outlook here.”

Wiedenfels’ statement also comes after WB launched a Wizarding World-themed spinoff in Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, which features many of the franchise’s most iconic characters, on September 3. Although the fast-paced, Bludger-beating, Snitch-catching game likely won’t reach the heights of its open-world predecessor, it’s already amassed a relatively respectable following after reaching a peak player count of 6,574 per SteamDB. And since it’s currently free with PS Plus, more people are likely playing it on other platforms.

Of course, it hasn’t all been good news for WB’s games division. One of the company’s most recent releases, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, was critically panned and a commercial failure, so its decision to pivot focus to a more proven IP isn’t a surprise. However, since they only launched Hogwarts Legacy a year ago, in 2023, details regarding its successor probably won’t appear soon, especially with the publisher’s planned Wonder Woman game already in the pipeline.
