Peter Moore gave the game a very low key announcement during Microsoft’s CES conference, but the news of the classic title was rather overshadowed by talk of the external HD DVD drive. Today Capcom has released full details on what could be one of Xbox Live Arcade’s most comprehensive titles.

As you’d expect, the game features a fully fledged set of modes with the usual Arcade, Vs. Mode, Training and CPU Battle modes. The game will feature all eight original characters plus four boss characters, each with their own game ending and home levels. The game has also been given a minor cosmetic makeover with new improved menus and has somehow been updated to include 5.1 audio.

The killer update comes with the implementation of online play. Capcom has gone to town with a new online mode exclusive to this version of the game. To recreate the “in the Arcade” feel, games can be viewed in real-time using a spectator mode. If you are so inclined you can then challenge a player that you have just been watching by using virtual “quarters” to buy into a fight, in the same way you might claim the right for the next fight down in the Arcade.

The game also features stat tracking with leaderboards for overall ranking, monthly ranking, individual character ranking, and consecutive wins. As with all Xbox 360 titles there will also be plenty of achievements to obtain, with more than ten available in the online and offline modes.

We are extremely excited to partner with Capcom on Xbox Live Arcade,” said Greg Canessa, Group Manager of Xbox Live Arcade at Microsoft. “Street Fighter is one of the most recognized and successful game franchises in history and it is an absolute honour to bring the arcade classic Street Fighter II’ Hyper Fighting to Xbox 360 users across the globe. Offering this flagship title in Xbox Live Arcade and imbuing it with full Xbox Live support is the answer to many gamers’ dreams, including mine.

Street Fighter II’ Hyper Fighting will be released on Xbox Live Arcade early this year complete with a two character demo.
