With the release of Starfield almost upon us, a number of Bethesda RPG fans are being reminded of the launch of other games in its catalogue, most notably the 2011 launch of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

In a thread on the Starfield Reddit, casperdacrook says “Think about it, some 12 year old out there is going to have the same experience with Starfield you got to have with Starfield. Thanks to Bethesda, this is shaping up to be another magical experience. I wish I was 13 again with very little responsibility. I would be like a jumping bean with excitement right now.” And this sense of childlike wonder seems to be infectious, with others sharing their memories of previous Bethesda RPGs.

“I was 18 when I played Oblivion, and I still remember my jaw dropping when I left the cave,” recalls Jack-of-Some. “I just stood there for what felt like hours.” “Oblivion blew my mind,” concurs Bodacious72, “there was nothing like it at the time.” “Yep, had one of my best summers ever. Just playing that game almost everyday.” adds KingKongdoor.

Some players even remember getting into trouble over Skyrim’s launch: “I was 16 and was grounded when Skyrim came out so I let my younger brother take my ID to Best Buy with my friend and buy me a copy of Skyrim during midnight release,” remembers Teebai. “My brother came home around 0130 am and I got 0 sleep before school the next day. Such a core gaming memory for me and my brother.”

In fact, some are going so far as to say the hype around Starfield’s launch is making them feel young again, such as totally_not_martian who says “I feel like a kid again. I maybe play for an hour now and just get bored. Friday will probably be the first all-nighter gaming session I’ve had in a long time.”

However, probably the response that sums up most of the community’s thoughts in the thread comes from PeymanHz7. “RN I’m so hyped for this game. It’s like the game I always dreamt of is here. I remember watching the direct and saying “Oh, I wish the game has that…” and then minutes later I would see it! Traits, base building, companions and magic – I wished for all of them, and each time I did, especially the magic, I remember the moment perfectly.”

“RN Starfield combat and graphics look amazing, and it’s giving me the Skyrim vibes. I haven’t seen much, but from that direct alone, I can say this game is just everything I need and more.” – with comments like that, it’s hard not to get caught up in the hype the community has for the game yourself.
