Death is inevitable, and nowhere is that more true than in a Bethesda RPG. With the upcoming release of Starfield, players are already making predictions of how they think they’ll bite the bullet first.

A post entitled ‘What do you predict will cause you to die the first time in the game?” has generated a bunch of ideas, although many predict their old nemesis gravity will be the driver of their first visit to the Grim Reaper. “Fall damage” replied StoneRevolver, with a great addition from Alden-Edison who clarifies that their first death will be “‘Checking’ for fall damage”. Whether that means that’s the excuse they’ll tell themselves, or whether it’s because, as Shaky2236 puts it, “Yeah 100% gonna overestimate my jetpack” either is just as likely the correct answer in our experience.

Stupidity and overconfidence is also a common theme with many of the answers given by the community to the question. “Some alien creature that is far more aggressive than I assumed it would be” is the suggestion put forward by StagnantGraffito, while Redeyed_Treefrog gives us the other side of the coin “I, for one, assume that my first death will be to an alien creature that is exactly as aggressive as I assumed it would be”. Perhaps the revelation that 90% of Starfield’s planets won’t have any life on them is a blessing in disguise for these players.

Given the amount of exploration intrepid astronauts will be encouraged to do, many players have no doubt their deaths might be caused by going where they shouldn’t. “When I pull out a gun in a large city and blast an annoying NPC in the face,” says Other_shallot243. Then the entire security force opens up on my level 1 ass. Reload.” Similarly, Invested_Glory says “I will try to fly into the star of that system…for science.” And yes, naturally many players will be attempting to answer gaming’s most important question, but are fully at peace with the fact it could come with lethal results. “My need to find out if I can pet alien animals,” -us too MrKain, us too.

Whatever the cause of our first abuse of the load/save system, there’s plenty to look forward to in Starfield. Meanwhile, some players are worried that Starfield’s physical editions may not come with a disc. We’ll find out when the game launches on September 6.
