As the hype for the imminent release of Starfield intensifies, players are speaking with their wallets and shooting up Starfield to the top of the Steam Top Sellers list just over a week out from release.
In fact, demand for Bethesda’s space faring RPG is already overtaking some of the most popular titles on Steam of recent months, including current darling of the moment Baldur’s Gate 3, which now sits in second place. At the time of writing (August 29, 2023) it’s also ahead of Counter-Strike Global Offensive (which will soon become Counter Strike 2 at some point in the next few weeks) and the excellent From Software title Armored Core 6 Fires of Rubicon.
Over on the Starfield reddit, fans of not just Bethesda, but of the genre altogether, are pleased with this outcome. “Honestly, it’s just so wonderful that we’ve got games like Starfield and BG3 coming out. My only real problem is not enough time to spend playing both!” says Malatar_The_Black, a sentiment I think many of us can get behind. Similarly, Rawrz720 points out there’s still more RPG goodness to come. “BG3, Starfield and the Cyberpunk expansion all in the span of a month is ridiculous for RPG fans lol.”
And while the achievement is impressive enough on its own, it’s also worth noting this isn’t even covering everyone who’ll be playing Starfield at launch. For one thing, these charts purely count Steam sales, and not PC sales on other platforms such as the Microsoft store, and it doesn’t factor in Xbox purchases. It also doesn’t factor in the surely bountiful multitudes that will be intending to pick up Starfield on Game Pass when it launches day one on that service too.
All in all then, there’s a lot to be excited about. We’re getting ready for a whole galaxy’s worth of Starfield content here in time for the Starfield release date on September 6 – but those with early access will be playing even sooner.
