Star Wars: Battlefront will feature a King of the Hill-style mode called Drop Zone, an 8v8 game of Rebel vs Empire in which the objective is to capture and control drop pods which fall from the sky.

Once a drop pod is located teams must make their way to it and trigger the short claim process. To win a team must capture five pods, or control a majority when the 10-minute match comes to an end.

If a pod finds itself endlessly switching between teams then a new pod will be released from the sky in order to end the stalemate.

“This goes hand in hand with our design philosophy behind many of the game modes in Star Wars Battlefront,” Lead Level Designer Dennis Brännvall explains. “We’re promoting the idea of a fast, action-packed game where you need to be mobile and think on your feet. Camping doesn’t really pay off.”

Claiming a pod causes it to open and dispense Power Pickups, but while you’re waiting around for the goods to appear another pod will hit the ground elsewhere on the map, meaning you are left with a dilemma.

“Playing Drop Zone on the Swamp Crash Site on Endor is a personal favourite. The map has a couple of nice choke points but is overall very free-flowing and hectic, as enemies can attack from anywhere on that level,” said Brännvall. “The fight takes place around a crashed GR-75 transport ship with containers from the craft strewn across the landscape, and there’s one section with a waterfall overlooked by an Ewok village, where you have to jump down into the pool below in order to claim the pod, hoping no one’s hiding in the trees above waiting to pick you off.”

Drop Zone will be one of the modes featured in the Star Wars: Battlefront beta, which is due to begin early next month.
