Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 has been met with a slew of review bombs following its latest update. While the update did bring an awesome new Operation that introduced the horrifying Bio Titan, it also saw a huge wave of nerfs making the game infinitely harder.

In response, developer Saber Interactive promised a fix for fans upset at the harder difficulty, and that patch is almost here.

Space Marine 2 difficulty patch

Publisher Focus Home Interactive has announced that the new Space Marine 2 Patch 4.01 will release tomorrow on October 24, 2024. This patch mostly aims to fix bugs and address the recently increase difficulty across the game. Fans who were upset at the masochistic increase in difficulty should be pleased,  but Saber isn’t done with polishing the game yet.

In a statement to the fanbase, game director Dmitriy Grigorenko thanked fans for their patience with the new patch and promised to introduce Public Test Servers for upcoming patches to avoid the same controversy in the past.

“We want to thank you all for being so involved with the game and making your opinions heard,” Grigorenko said. “While we noticed criticism with regards to difficulty adjustments—and rightly so—we’d also like to thank you for your very positive feedback on the new “Termination” map. No matter the feedback, we’re grateful that you feel so passionate about Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.”

In the statement, the game director promised that “major balance updates” will be trialed on Public Test Servers in the future. However, these servers won’t be available until 2025 at the earliest.

“The key takeaway for me, personally, is that I forgot that once the game comes out, it’s no longer a dev’s game. It’s yours first and foremost,” he said.

A patch for fans

In the patch notes for the new update, found here, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 has reduced the spawn rate of Extremis enemies to match pre-Patch 4.0 levels and significantly reduced spawn rate of Extremis enemies on Ruthless difficulty.

Nearly every weapon in the game has also been buffed to make players feel more like an Ultramarine. The Ruthless difficulty mode also increases the armour of all players by 10%, allowing them to take far more damage.

Just like Helldivers 2, Space Marine 2 updates have seen some harsh criticism for nerfing weapons after launch. While the massive swarms of Tyranids and Chaos armies feel almost insurmountable, it’s also important to feel powerful.
