South of Midnight was an underrated revelation during the June 2023 Xbox Games Showcase as Compulsion Games’ brilliant announcement trailer showcased its intriguing premise and fascinating characters. Although no in-game snippets were actually shown throughout the course of the short preview, some of the scenes towards the clip’s latter portion indicate that its world and combat will revolve around magic and mythical creatures.

Unfortunately, the snippet did not provide us with a release date so we will have to remain patient for now until the developers decide to give out more details. Since it was exhibited during the Xbox Games Showcase, however, it has been revealed the game is going to be available on current generation Xbox consoles and PC as well as on Game Pass upon launch.

But aside from the gorgeous, yet slightly nightmarish scenes of the video, creative director David Sears and narrative producer James Lewis have also provided us with an in-depth look at some of the other elements we can expect through an interview with Xbox Wire. According to the creators, “the settings you travel through will be almost exclusively rural, reflecting the places in between major urban areas, and the sense of wonder and danger they can hold.”

Additionally, South of Midnight’s plot revolves around Hazel, the protagonist featured heavily in the trailer, as she “sets off on a quest to repair a broken world.” Apparently, the enemies you meet and take on in the game will all be “based on real-life folklore from the region the game takes its inspirations from,” so the massive looming shadow shown in the preview will more than likely be a beast that you’ve heard of before.

If you want to see South of Midnight’s magic for yourself, then we recommend watching the brilliant trailer as soon as you can. While you wait for an eventual launch date announcement, though, check out some of the show’s other highlights, including Starfield’s overhauled combat system and the BioShock Infinite-like Clockwork Revolution.
