Sony has said its “current generation of PSPs continue to be in demand,” but hasn’t gone as far as to confirm the future of the handheld in the wake of rumours pointing to its demise.
According to Andriasang – based on a report by a Sony Shop employee – production of the PSPgo has been cancelled with no further shipments being sent to Japanese retailers.
This follows the earlier removal of the PSPgo from the Japanese Sony Store – the handheld remains listed on the UK store.
Responding to MCV, Sony Computer Entertainment UK supplied the following statement: “It is a very exciting time for PlayStation portable devices. Before the end of the year we are launching NGP, our next generation portable device, which we believe will revolutionise portable gaming.
“In the meantime, the current generation of PSPs continue to be in demand, especially since the introduction of our value for money, Essentials range of games and we will continue to meet that demand.”
Sony’s being extremely cagey with its official response, both offering some reassurance that the current line of PSPs remain in their thoughts, but at the same time failing to deny reports of its demise.
If the handheld is to be put to rest then Sony won’t want to deter potential customers by publicising its end prematurely – we wouldn’t be surprised to see the current PSP range being gradually phased out once the NGP launches late this year or in early 2012.
