The Blue Blur is making his third outing to the cinema in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie.

Following two wildly successful instalments, it’s a no-brainer Sonic and pals would be coming back for a third – and Paramount has now set a release date for the next film.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 movie.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie – release date & cast news

As per a tweet from the movie’s official Twitter account, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arrives on the big screen on December 20, 2024.

Sonic, Tails and Knuckles all seem to be returning if the tweet is anything to go by. They’re voiced by Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughessey and Idris Elba respectively.

The human cast, however, could be a little more murky. We’d think James Marsden and Tika Sumpter would return as Tom and Maddie Wahcowski, even if their roles seem to be getting smaller across the series.

However, the status of Jim Carrey’s Doctor ‘Eggman’ Robotnik is a little more murky. In April of this year, Carrey claimed he was considering his retirement from acting.

Speaking to Access Hollywood, he said “If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

It’s not clear just yet if the script for Sonic 3 has indeed been written in gold ink, but hopefully we’ll get an update in the future as it’d be weird to see a Sonic movie without his nemesis. For what it’s worth, the film’s producers told IGN they had no intention of recasting the role, should Carrey opt not to return.

That’s not to say the third movie will be devoid of villains, however. Mild spoilers for the second movie ahead, but a sneaky post-credit scene introduced us to Shadow the Hedgehog. Just as with Tails last time, he’ll almost certainly be a key player in the third movie. However, who’s playing him is yet to be announced.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie – Knuckles Paramount Plus spin-off

In the meantime, Sonic fans can also look forward to a live-action TV series set in the movie’s universe. It won’t be the Blue Blur fronting this one however. A Knuckles Live action TV show was announced at the same time as the third movie.

It’ll star Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna, and will arrive on Paramount Plus at some point in 2023. Plot details, and where in the timeline the show will be set, is still to be announced. For now, you’ll have to watch this space for more info as and when we get it.
