Sony has announced that SOCOM 3 is in development for the PlayStation 2, for release sometime late this year. Being one of the few PlayStation 2 games that is played by a lot of people online, it is no surprise that the third game in the series will feature more of the online action that made the previous games such a hit.

The game is said to offer the usual improvements found in new iterations of a series, such as improved AI, but most exciting is the promise of play areas up to six times the size of those found in the previous games. You’ll be able to take control of a number of vehicles and tackle missions in a variety of ways.

It all sounds very good, but the real test will probably come at E3 in May, where we hope to play the game for the first time.
