During tonight’s State of Play broadcast, we got a good kind of jumpscare, when Konami announced the surprise drop of a brand new Silent Hill game entitled The Short Message.

As per the PlayStation Blog, Silent Hill The Short Message started out as an ‘experimental project’ and takes place in a modern day, ‘contemporary setting’ including the trappings of social media. You can check out the trailer for yourself here – but be warned it looks like a very suitably creepy first person horror game, so prepare for plenty of disturbing images.

On top of that, we were also treated to the first gameplay footage of the upcoming Silent Hill 2 Remake coming from Bloober Team. As predicted, we’ll now be controlling protagonist James Sutherland from an over the shoulder perspective, rather than the original game’s fixed camera angles – but it certainly looks atmospheric, with familiar monsters such as the nurses looking particularly grotesque in their new modern guises. We didn’t, however, get any indication of when we can expect the new title – with the trailer only concluding that the game is still in development for the PlayStation 5. For now, fans will have to wait a little longer to see more.

In the meantime, Silent Hill The Short Message is available now to download for free from the PlayStation Store.
