Silent Hill f has received gushing reviews, and its Metacritic aggregate has cemented the game as the best completely new Silent Hill in over two decades. We bestowed Silent Hill f with a 9/10 in our review, praising the game as a return to form for the franchise. Leading up to its release, the game’s producer discussed how the series had lost its “essence of Japanese horror,” which is why they brought the franchise to Japan for the very first time and set out to deliver one of the most disturbing experiences possible. Suffice to say developer NeoBard succeeded as evidenced by the game’s onslaught of praise.
Silent Hill f Metacritic reviews cement game as best in over two decades
Silent Hill f currently has an 86 on Metacritic based on 74 reviews. It’s possible this score could slightly fluctuate, but right now it’s currently equal to the best installments in the series, and it is the best completely new game in over two decades.
The highest rated SH on Metacritic is the original Silent Hill 2 from 2001 with an 89. The Silent Hill 2 Remake received an 86, which is the same score for the original Silent Hill from 1999. Fans of the PS1 classic will be thrilled to know that Bloober Team are officially developing a Silent Hill 1 Remake.
Silent Hill 3 from 2003 received an 85, but then the series dipped in quality. The massively underappreciated SH4 The Room has an aggregate of 76, meanwhile, SH Origins has a slightly better 78. Homecoming in 2008 got a 70, and the Nintendo Wii exclusive, Shattered Memories, received a 79. Downpour in 2012 got a 64, and Book of Memories in the same year settled at an abysmal 58.
The worst rated Silent Hill is the free-to-play Short Message. It’s hard to consider this a full fledged game rather than a tech demo, but technically it is the worst rated Silent Hill video game by Metacritic standards.
Not counting the SH2 Remake because of its nature, Silent Hill f is the best rated new entry in the franchise since the original SH2 back in 2001. This shows the developers succeeded in returning the franchise to form, and it means fans of the J-horror IP have another excellent installment to brave.
The Silent Hill f developer originally wanted to set the game in the real-life Silent Hill in Japan, but they couldn’t because of a distracting landmark. The game’s main actress has also discussed how mentally demanding her role was, describing it as so traumatising she felt her “own sanity slipping”.
