Silent Hill F if set to be another terrifying entry in the long-running horror series, this time moving from small town America to 1960s Japan. While the final game is set in the completely fictional town of Ebisugaoka, the team originally wanted the game to be set in the real-life equivalent of Silent Hill.
For the unaware, the location of Silent Hill is based on the Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan, which literally translates into “Silent Hill”. For the new game, the team at NeoBards Entertainment wanted to go back to the series’ origins, but the real-life location’s closeness to the towering Mount Fuji ruined the horror vibes.
Silent Hill F was changed because of Mt. Fuji
Speaking in an interview with Famtisu at Anime Expo 2025 (thanks, VGC), writer Ryukishi07 explained that the game’s leads wanted “all the staff to have a common understanding of where the game was set”. This led to the team taking trips to the real-life Silent Hill where the game was originally set.
“In fact, since this is Silent Hill, we actually visited Shizuoka Prefecture as a potential location,” the writer said. “However, when we actually went there, we felt that the presence of Mount Fuji as seen from Shizuoka was too overbearing and it didn’t seem suitable for a Silent Hill setting.
The writer explained that the iconic Japanese landmark “looms over the entire area” and its “presence would overwhelm the foggy atmosphere of the work”. With the team making a horror game so terrifying that its already traumatised its main actor, it seems the right choice was made.
The writer explained that the team visited a number of other locations before settling on the “grid-like townscape of Kanayama” due to its “interesting shape”. The flatter, compressed setting not only fit well with the level design of a traditional survival horror game, but allowed the location to be completely “engulfed in fog” as it “shifts nightmarishly”.
Silent Hill F releases on September 25, 2025 for Xbox Series, PS5 and PC. Multiple other games in the series are also in development, including a full remake of the original game from developer Bloober Team.
