Sega is set to announce a “new project” this week, and it is likely to be another mini-console. Could it be a Dreamcast mini?

A message on the official Japanese Sega Twitter account says:

“Urgent notice! Live broadcast to announce Sega’s new project will be delivered from 20:00 on June 3.”

Whatever this news is, Sega will stream it via a live presentation on its Japanese YouTube Channel. Hiroyuki Miyazaki and Yosuke Okunari will appear in the stream, and there was a slight hint as to its subject.

The tweet asks, “Does that mean?” followed by a picture of a chocolate cake shaped like a Mega Drive controller. Miyazaki and Okunari both previously announced the Mega Drive Mini. So does this hint that the reveal will be another Mini console. And, if it does, what will it be?

In an interview with Famitsu magazine (via VGC) Okunari said:

“I think for the next one, we may go with a concept close to the Mega Drive Mini. If I have to say some names, it could be an SG-1000 Mini or a Dreamcast Mini.”

So there you have it. Personally, I hope that it’s a Dreamcast Mini. No console is more romanticised than the Dreamcast. And a re-edition would be a treat—especially if it comes with those little plug-in Visual Memory Units.
