SEGA has announced a four-game deal with Osaka-based Platinum Games that will see titles hitting numerous platforms including Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and Nintendo DS.

Speaking at SEGA’s unveil event earlier this week a spokesperson said: “As you know, SEGA in the last four years has spent time re-engineering itself away from a hardware company to a multi-platform software company. And we think that in most areas we’ve got it right. So in four short years we’ve come a long way and re-invented ourselves. But there’s one area that at the moment is still out of our reach, and it’s the area of new IP; new, innovative, creative ideas that set new standards and deliver new gaming experiences to our audience, and that’s the area that we want to break in to.”

SEGA sees this area as key to its expansion, but also a very difficult area to get in to.

“If you take the UK for example, last year, the calendar year, the top 40 best-selling titles, only a handful were new IP – only two were from third-party publishers, BioShock and Assassin’s Creed. It’s an extremely valuable part of the business and very important that we do well in that business to entertain our consumers throughout the world.”

It’s the association with Platinum Games that it hopes will bring them success in the area of new IP. According to SEGA the titles from Platinum Games feature “some of the most innovative ideas that have been in video games for some time”.

Three of the four titles were announced at the event. Mad World is a violent 3D action game made exclusively for the Wii, Bayonetta is a brand-new 3D action game from the original creator of Devil May Cry for Xbox 360 and PS3, and Infinite Line is a space exploration game from Nude Maker for the DS. The fourth game is being headed up by Shinji Mikami, creator of the Resident Evil series and director of Resident Evil 4. No details on the game were given at the event.

Speaking at the event, Tatsuya Minami, President and CEO of Platinum Games was more than confident about the games his studio is creating for SEGA.

“A lot of people have been saying that Japanese developers have lost a bit of the betina that they’ve had in previous years. We’d like to let everyone know that we are different. We like to create games that have worldwide appeal and can be enjoyed across the globe.”
