Microsoft announced during its Gamescom 2017 event that its upcoming title, Sea of Thieves, will feature cross-play between Xbox One and PC. So players can embark on pirate voyages together, regardless of their platform, but provided it’s a Microsoft one. You can even lob a bucket of vomit on other players, how lovely.

Microsoft’s PC design lead, Ted Timmins, has espoused the need for cross-play and the benefits this brings. Writing in a new blog post he said that, ‘An interesting part of cross play is how wide it throws open the doors for different communities to engage and play together, and therefore increases the wealth of stories you’re likely to tell.’

Timmins also said that a big factor was for the game to be fair for everyone, whatever their device. ‘After running some recent tests, we found that PC players were 4.5% more efficient at killing skeletons than Xbox players, and this feels close enough that it’s something we’ll continue to monitor,’ he said.

It has also been announced that Sea of Thieves will support 21:9 displays on the PC version, and it’ll be one of the games that will receive enhancements courtesy of the power of the Xbox One X.

Sea of Thieves is due to release in early 2018, launching at the same time on Xbox One and PC.
