Sea of Stars, the next game from The Messenger developer Sabotage Studio, is heading to PlayStation, Switch, and PC next year.

There is a new trailer for the game, which gives us a look at its combat system. Take a look:

The description reads:

“Sea of Stars is a turn-based RPG inspired by the classics. It tells the story of two Children of the Solstice who combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fending off the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer.”

As you can see, it wears its Chrono Trigger influence on tis sleeve. That pixel art is lush, intricate, and smooth. And, even though this wouldn’t be my thing, the battle system looks intriguing. Mostly because it looks timing-heavy.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sabotage Studio’s creative director, Thierry Boulanger, said:

“Sabotage was founded with a clear goal in mind; presenting our own “definitive editions” of the game genres we grew up playing. By combining retro aesthetics and modern design, we shoot for experiences that capture what we loved about games of old while leaving behind the elements we feel might hold them back today.”

Elsewhere in the blog post, Boulanger makes it clear that the game won’t feature any grinding. Which, if you don’t appreciate that genre tradition, is good news. Plus, he also talks about the game’s combat, which has an emphasis on timing and “boosting.”

Sea of Stars is out on PlayStation, Switch, and PC in 2023.
