Guitar Hero TV’s first big update has launched, bringing an element of competitive play to the mode, Activision and Freesytle Games have announced.

“Starting today, when you pop into the GHTV channels, you’ll experience what we are calling Rival Challenges,” explains creative director Jamie Jackson. “As you play through the channels, you will periodically be matched up against a similar-skilled opponent to square off, 1-on-1 style, in a song battle to test your skills.”

You can unlock Rival Challenges once you are level 10 or higher, a decision made by the developer because at this point players have access to Guitar Upgrades and Hero Powers.

You’ll get a Rival Challenge twice in every half-hour show, with the song choice picked by the game, not players. The winner of each battle earns an extra +100 Status XP.

The game is also now handing out play tokens to players who have used up all their tokens. Look out for a daily reward of three plays.

“We’ll have some great holiday-themed shows coming up in GHTV, so keep an eye out for some awesome playable Christmas favourites coming your way,” concluded Jackson.
