The Ridge Racer series is returning with an all-new 3D outing set for release on 3DS during the handheld’s launch period, Namco Bandai has announced.

The series’ addictive drift racing and high speed will be coupled with 3D visuals to create a “level of intimacy with the on-screen races like never before”.

Namco Bandai claims the addition of 3D will enable players to “accurately judge the distance between them and the competition”. 3D effects will also see dirt fly through the screen on rough terrain and nitrous flames will burst out of tail pipes.

Other features include a line up of high-powered muscle cars, which join the existing in-game selection of sports cars. Also new is a Drift Button, which aims to make it easier than ever – not that it was very difficult in the first place – to pull off spectacular turns through tight corners.

The game will also offer new circuits, including canyons and snow-capped mountains in addition to fan favourite courses from previous Ridge Racer titles.

An ad-hoc multiplayer mode will enable up to four players to battle it out, with players choosing a Mii or personal photo to appear above their car during a race.

Players will also be able to swap Ghost data through StreetPass, and create a ‘My Ranking’ profile by swapping course records with friends.

Ridge Racer is a classic launch title – usually on Sony platforms – and after a lengthy absence it’s great to see the arcade racer return. Our one worry comes from the inclusion of a Drift Button, but we hope this is optional.
