It probably shouldn’t be a surprise, but Respawn founders Jason West and Vince Zampella have revealed how they now know a lot more lawyers, following their messy exit from Activision-owned Infinity Ward.
“The biggest change for me is probably I know a lot more lawyers and they look over all the contracts. So that’s the biggest change for me,” said West talking to IGN, clearly having a sly dig at what went on between the pair and Activision.
Respawn is an independent studio currently working on a title for EA, and Zampella feels owning their IP is empowering.
“I think one of the things that we’re setting out to do is empowering people here to have ownership in what they’re working on,” Zampella said. “Respawn has ownership of the IP that we’re working on. So that empowers everyone here to feel more ownership and put more of themselves into it. We’re not the only studio that does that, but it’s a big part of what we’re trying to do.”
What might be surprising given the profile of the new studio is its size, but there’s definitely room to grow.
“55 full-time employees, and then we have some contractors, like concept artists that we have on, 4 or 5 people right now that are contracting,” revealed Zampella. “We’ll get bigger, but we’re slowing growing. We had a growing spurt at the start. There was a lot of interest when we started up, and we’re hiring on now as we need. We’re pretty solid in every category, but there will be other needs. And we’re always hiring good engineers.”
Respawn’s title for EA is yet to be revealed and no release date has been set.
