In an interview with the Washington Post, Reggie Fils-Aimé spoke about the current contract worker controversy at Nintendo.

A Nintendo of America employee filed an official complaint, last month, regarding Nintendo’s alleged interference in unionisation efforts.

IGN and Kotaku have both spoken to current and former contract workers on the situation. They include criticisms of the pay and benefits to contract workers. As well as the lack of opportunity for progression within the company, and a general feeling of inclusion.

“A core focus while I was at Nintendo of America was having a healthy culture within the company,” said Fils-Aimé. “I know I was able to achieve that.” Fils-Aimé noted that the situation in the reports “does not seem like a healthy culture.”

Fils-Aimé spoke about the treatment of contract workers while he was there. “While I was at Nintendo, we routinely had meetings and events where our Associates—that’s how we referred to our contract employees—were invited.” He also mentioned inviting contract workers to “bi-monthly and quarterly lunches.”

Fils-Aimé’s then went on to say that the nature of the reports, and of the division between contractors and full-time employees, was saddening. “The reports I hear really strike me as just not the company I knew. And I’ll just leave it at that.”
