Rockstar Games has revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 will not adopt the character switching mechanic seen in Grand Theft Auto 5.

Speaking with the Hollywood Reporter, Red Dead 2's art director, Josh Bass, said that the Wild West prequel is focused entirely on its central protagonist, Arthur Morgan. Having said that, the Van der Linde gang are still very much an important part of the game's narrative.

'Sticking with a single character felt more appropriate for the structure and narrative of a western,' said Bass.

'Arthur lives with and fights alongside the other members of the Van der Linde gang, and they are a group of fully realized characters with relationships to each other and to Arthur, but this is Arthur’s story and we are placing players firmly in Arthur’s boots as he and the gang deal with a rapidly changing world,' he added. 'We think people will really love the feeling of being in the gang. It isn’t like anything we’ve done before.'

GTA 5 features three playable protagonists, with Rockstar giving players the chance to switch between any one of them on the fly.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is scheduled for release on October 26 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While no PC version has been confirmed just yet, it's rumoured Rockstar is working on it.
