Almost 30 years since the world said an emotional goodbye to “Quantum Leap” as the show’s hero, Dr. Sam Beckett, made the emotional and selfless decision to continue leaping through time, dedicating his life to continuing to help others by correcting their histories. The show’s broadcaster, NBC Universal, are going back to the world of “Quantum Leap” to tell a brand new story set in the modern day. But, unlike most modern releases of beloved classic TV shows. This one isn’t a reboot.

No, thankfully, this “Quantum Leap” is a direct sequel to the original series following a new time traveller, Dr. Ben Seong, and showing the legacy of the original Project Quantum Leap, and how it has been been advanced by modern technology as the US government once again sets out to try and master time travel.

16/09/2022:

In news that will be variably heart breaking and disappointing for long time “Quantum Leap” fans. Original series star, Scott Bakula, has definitively put to rest the persistent rumours that he would, in someway, be involved with the new “Quantum Leap” sequel series.

As, in a lengthy and heartfelt message on his official Instagram page, which you can read below. Bakula explains that he has no connection to the new series either as an actor or a crew member.

He then explains that although a script was sent to him in January 2022, he made, in his own words ,“a very difficult decision”, to pass on the new show. However, he ends his message by wishing luck to everyone involved in the new series.

When does “Quantum Leap” Release?

The show is due to premiere the first episode of it’s first season on Monday 19th September 2022 in the USA with premiere dates globally still to be confirmed.

Where can I watch “Quantum Leap”?

As this is an NBC Universal production, it will be airing exclusively on NBC in the USA, with the episodes then likely to be made available on their Peacock streaming platform. The show will then air globally on NBC Universal’s regional broadcast partners and likely on their regional Peacock platforms if Peacock is currently available in that region.

What is the story of this new “Quantum Leap”?

Per the story synopsis for the show’s first season on its official website:

“It’s been nearly 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now, a new team, led by physicist Ben Song (Raymond Lee), has been assembled to restart the project in hope of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it. Everything changes, however, when Ben makes an unauthorized leap into the past, leaving the team behind to solve the mystery of why he did it. At Ben’s side throughout his leaps is Addison (Caitlin Bassett), who appears in the form of a hologram only Ben can see and hear. She’s a decorated Army veteran who brings level-headed precision to her job. At the helm of the highly confidential operation is Herbert “Magic” Williams (Ernie Hudson), a no-nonsense career military man who has to answer to his bosses who won’t be happy once they learn about the breach of protocol. The rest of the team at headquarters includes Ian Wright (Mason Alexander Park), who runs the Artificial Intelligence unit “Ziggy,” and Jenn Chou (Nanrisa Lee), who heads up digital security for the project. As Ben leaps from life to life, putting right what once went wrong, it becomes clear that he and the team are on a thrilling journey. However, Addison, Magic, Ian and Jenn know that if they are going to solve the mystery of Ben’s leap and bring him home, they must act fast or lose him forever.”

Please be aware that the lead character’s surname is in fact Seong, not Song, as noted above. But, as it is an official synopsis that I’ve quoted, I’ve chosen to leave their misspelling in for the accuracy of the quote.

Who stars in the new “Quantum Leap” show?

Raymond Lee plays Dr. Ben Seong

Ernie Hudson plays Herbert ‘Magic’ Williams
