Blimey, would you Adam and Eve it? Yep, that’s another week done and dusted, and with it a whole bunch of (hopefully) exciting video game news to digest. Being an EastEnders fan, I know how important catching up on stuff is, so that’s why I’m here to guide you through the biggest gaming stories of the past week before you bugger off down the pub, play some Fortnite, fire up Netflix, or do whatever it is you do on a Friday night. But first, I’ll get the important stuff out of the way…
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Rylan Clarke-Neil, probably the biggest success the X-Factor has ever seen. Not content with becoming Gary Barlow’s best mate, enjoying a stint on This Morning and Big Brother, Rylan has now landed a gig on Strictly Come Dancing! Yep, the man who broke down in tears in front of Nicole Scherzinger is joining Zoe Ball on spin-off show, It Takes Two. Is there nothing Rylan can’t do? Apparently not.
Meanwhile, Danny ‘I’m fxxxing Danny Dyer’ Dyer has been snapped by the paps caravan shopping in West Sussex. Apparently, the cockney geezer, who plays Mick Carter in EastEnders, is looking for a little gaf by the sea. Sounds like a good plan to me, mate.
PS5 gets first official details, will support 8k and is backwards compatible with PS4
Sony’s Mark Cerny finally let the cat out of the bag in regards to the company’s next generation plans this week, confirming what we’ve known for yonks now: PlayStation 5 is in the works. Speaking with Wired, the system architect and Knack creator (that last one probably still stings a bit) confirmed some of the innards of the system, as well as a few key facts: 1) it’ll be backwards compatible with PS4 games and 2) it will still take discs. Not only that, it seems devs are keen on the PS5 packing an SSD, and Cerny revealed that Sony is fitting the new console with a specialised version of this technology. Sadly, we won’t get a sniff of the console this year; Sony won’t be talking about it at E3, and it’s not out in 2019, either. Still, the ball’s in your court now, Microsoft.
Xbox One S All-Digital Edition announced, out next month
Microsoft finally unveiled its long-rumoured Xbox One S All-Digital Edition earlier this week, and it’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect. It’s got all the same technical bits and bobs as the regular Xbox One S; only, it doesn’t have a disc drive. It ships with three games, including last year’s Sea of Thieves, which, at this point, is in far better shape than it was at launch.
Microsoft unveils Xbox Game Pass Ultimate
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is officially happening, and it’s coming later this year. As expected, it combines both Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold in one package, and, more importantly, just one subscription price – £10.99. To be fair, it’s a pretty solid deal. Xbox Game Pass gives you access to a huge amount of content already, and Xbox Live Gold has the added bonus of free games each month via Games with Gold. Add all that up and you’re getting a hell of a lot of bang for your buck.
Master Chief has been cast in the Halo TV series
The Halo TV series has been simmering away for a while now at Showtime, but the project has finally reached a new milestone, with official casting details on Master Chief. The alien-stomping Spartan will be played by American Gods’ Pablo Schreiber; an interesting choice, although it remains to be seen if we’ll see his face or not. Still, with production set to kick off later this year, it’s good to see the project finally gathering steam.
A cheaper Switch model is reportedly due later this year
The Nikkei has chimed in again on Ninty’s alleged plans for a new Switch mode, revealing that the format holder will launch a cheaper version of the hybrid platform later this year. This is hardly the first time we’ve heard chatter about a new Switch. The Wall Street Journal reckons we’re getting two new models, although the Nikkei’s latest report seems to indicate that the ‘Pro’ version – that is, a beefier version of the Big N’s latest machine – has been delayed. Originally, it was thought we’d see at least one of them by summer, but that’s no longer the case, apparently. Maybe we’ll get an official blurb at E3?
