The PS3 sold 12.2 million consoles in the first 9 months of Sony’s financial year 2010 (April 1, 2010 through March 31, 2011). That’s an increase of 1.4 million on the console’s sales over the same period in 2009.

Lifetime sales of the PS3 now stand at 47.9 million. The Xbox 360 topped 50 million at the start of the year. According to MCV sales of the console in the UK are now approaching 4 million.

Sony is forecasting sales of 8 million PSPs and 6 million PS2s in its 2010 financial year.

While the PS3 didn’t have the best end to 2010 in the US (being easily beaten by the Xbox 360 and Wii), life to date sales are edging ever closer to Microsoft’s console.

Sony must think it will overtake before the end of the PS3’s life, with the console still having a long way to go before its price reaches the lows which saw PS2 sales extend beyond 150 million over 10 years.
