Sony has released an update for its PS3 PVR, PlayTV, adding a new SD upscaler and other new features.

The features have been revealed in a Three Speech video blog in which Producer Mark Bunting detailed what’s new. The new SD upscaler promises sharper pictures and improved contrast, which sounds good, although presumably results will vary depending on the source material.

Also new is the ability to launch into watching TV directly from the XMB, rather than first loading the PlayTV app. Users will also be able to make use of new fast-forward and rewind speeds, plus volume controls.

You’ll find further details over on Three Speech, including instructions on how to download the update.
