There are still a lot of fantastic games set to come out this month. The biggest is no doubt Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater, but PlayStation will also finally be treated to Gears of War for the first time ever. While both experiences are exciting, PS Plus Extra subscribers should look forward to an imminent day one release that is “highly recommended” by former PlayStation president.
PS Plus August 2025 day one release “highly recommended” by former PlayStation president
Sony has just revealed the PS Plus Extra and Premium additions for August 19th. Extra includes massive juggernauts Marvel’s Spider-Man and Mortal Kombat 1, and there’s also the brilliant Coral Island that has just received multiplayer update 1.2. Of course, what’s especially fantastic is Premium getting the PS1 versions of Resident Evil 2 and 3.
The upcoming additions from Sony are great, but one game you definitely shouldn’t sleep on is Sword of the Sea. Former president of SIE World Studios for Sony Interactive Entertainment, Shuhei Yoshida, previously said it was his “favorite” game at Summer Game Fest, and he has now “highly recommended” it once again.
Shuhei Yoshida’s word carries a lot of weight because, apart from previously being the president of PlayStation, he hyped Blue Prince as a “GOTY contender” before it joined PS Plus day one back in April. He was certainly right as it’s still the second highest rated new release of 2025 on Metacritic just behind Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and not including the re-releases of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild for Switch 2.
In addition to Shuhei Yoshida’s recommendation, Eurogamer has said PS Plus subscribers are in for an “absolute treat”. Eurogamer were able to interview Giant Squid’s creative director, Matt Nava, at Summer Game Fest, and the creative director compared Sword of the Sea to extreme sports such as snowboarding and surfing, with the artistic beauty you’d expect from the studio behind spiritualistic experiences, Abzu and The Pathless, as well as the art director of Journey.
Eurogamer were full of praise for what they were able to play at Summer Game Fest, and we absolutely cannot wait to experience Sword of the Sea. If you are PS Plus Extra or Premium subscriber, you will be able to play at no added cost on August 19th.
In other PlayStation news, PS6 console and handheld specs have leaked online with “likely” release window.
