After being stuck in development hell for close to half a decade, Ubisoft has finally announced when the long-awaited Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is arriving. According to its reveal during the 2024 Ubisoft Showcase, its release date will take place at some point in 2026. Unfortunately, this means it’ll take some time before you can re-experience the harrowing, time-bending tale of Dastan.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake was first announced in 2020 during a Sony State of Play event, with a release date set for January 2021. Unfortunately, this date came and went as Ubisoft Mumbai and Pune struggled with development. Eventually, the game was given back to its original developers, Ubisoft Montreal. It was later announced that it had been delayed indefinitely and many questioned whether we would ever see the sixth-generation classic be brought into the modern era.
In April 2024 there were rumblings regarding the future of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake as the game had been rebooted and the developers worked from the ground up to create a new experience. Although 2026 still is a long way off, with its history of development, and the fact that Ubisoft scrapped the game midway through development, it is understandable that is going to take some time before it is eventually released. But, the takeaway from this announcement is that the project is not dead and fans of the original will soon get to experience it again with a fresh coat of paint.
Since its release in 2003, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has gone on to sell over 14 million copies across all platforms, making it one of the best-selling sixth-generation releases, standing toe to toe with the likes of Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, and Resident Evil.
In addition to the exciting Sands of Time reveal, Ubisoft also showcased the upcoming DLC for its recently released, critically acclaimed creation, Prince of Persia The Lost Crown. Called Mask of Darkness, the upcoming story expansion will be released in September 2024 as a free content update. Yes, you won’t have to pay for all the new challenges, amulets, and revisited bosses you’ll be seeing once it drops.
