Prey 2 will not make use of id’s in-development id Tech 5 engine, publisher Bethesda has confirmed.

Bethesda announced Human Head’s Prey 2 yesterday, stating that the game coming to Xbox 360, PS3 and PC “is being built on the cutting edge id tech engine from id Software.” At the time the publisher couldn’t confirm which version of the engine the developer was using, but Bethesda’s director of marking and PR Pete Hines has cleared things up.

“This game has been in development for quite a while and id Tech 5 is still in progress (until Rage ships, and probably even after). So it really wasn’t an option,” Hines told IGN.

While disappointing it’s not entirely unexpected that Prey 2 isn’t using the newest version of the id Tech engine. It also doesn’t mean the game won’t look great. Splash Damage’s Brink looks excellent and is using a modified version of id’s previous tech.
