Some may view the 3DS as a system on the way out – and who can blame them given Nintendo Switch is arriving in March – but the launch of Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon indicates there may still be life in the ageing handheld.

Combined sales of Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon make it Nintendo’s biggest-selling game of all time at launch in the UK, outpacing previous record holder Wii Fit, reports GamesIndustry. Remember that Wii Fit was a sell out success at the height of the Wii’s staggering success, and you’ll begin to understand just how popular the latest Pokemon games are.

Against previous Pokemon instalments, Sun and Moon also stack up well, shifting twice the units of 2014’s Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Although largely selling to the in-place 3DS install base, GI notes that over 35,000 3DS systems were sold during Black Friday week.

Pokemon Go‘s success may not have had a direct impact on Nintendo’s balance sheet, but its record-breaking user numbers have surely helped drive interest in the newest fully-fledged Pokemon experience.
