The PS5 Pro has been officially announced as a more powerful version of the current PlayStation system. At an extreme price of $699.99 without a physical disc drive, the new PS5 is an expensive beast, and it doesn’t even come with a vertical stand.
PlayStation 5 Pro wants you to pay for a stand
As you’ve likely noticed in marketing material for the new PS5 Pro, Sony has been keen to show the system standing tall on its swanky stand. However, every picture of the console also comes with a watermark explaining that the console’s vertical stand is not included with the console.
Instead, players will have to purchase a vertical stand from Sony or another retailer, and a disc drive if they wish to play their physical games or watch a 4K Blu-ray. While cheap, the PS5 vertical stand is an additional $29.99 purchase for gamers already dropping $700 in Sony’s lap.
With a digital-only console (unless you buy a disc drive for $79.99) meaning players will be stuck buying games exclusively from Sony’s store, PS5 Pro users are already locking in for a future of paying Sony. The least the company could do is include a stand for their console.
A damn shame
PlayStation’s move to remove items from the PS5 and sell them back to users for an extra fee is the result of market dominance. As the leader of the home console race, Sony sets the precedent, and with Xbox far behind in second place, there is no reason for Sony to even think about keeping costs in check.
Even with the lack of a disc drive, the additional cost for its cheap, plastic stand and the lack of any exciting PS5 Pro upgrades on launch, Sony’s console will sell. However, it likely won’t be anywhere near as popular as the PS4 Pro, a much more cost-effective, much more useful, and much friendlier upgrade during the last generation.
