PlayStation 4 specification revealed – has 8GB memory, 8-core CPU and a next-gen AMD GPU

The hardware specification of PlayStation 4 has been announced, with the biggest surprise being the inclusion of 8GB GDDR5 memory.

Sony says the next generation console has been designed from the ground up to “ensure that the very best games and the most immersive experiences reach PlayStation gamers”.

The platform holder emphasised that PS4 offers high performance and ease of development, with the system centred around a custom chip that contains eight x86-64 cores and a state of the art graphics processor.

The GPU contains a unified array of 18 compute units, which collectively generate 1.84 Teraflops of processing power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two. The 8GB or GDDR5 memory gives the system 176 GB/second of bandwidth and promises a further boost to graphics performance.

A built-in hard disk drive is also confirmed, but Sony has offered no further information on this.
