The “small” memory size of consoles is an issue for PC-to-console ports of MMOs, according to PlanetSide 2’s creative director Matthew Higby.

Describing to VideoGamer.com whether MMOs will continue branching out to new platforms, Higby said he thought so. However there are many issues to be tackled before an MMO can make the leap from PC to console.

“You know, it’s much different to make an MMO for a console than it is to make an MMO for a PC. It takes a lot of work. The most difficult thing is porting all the UI over. You have to create UI that is joypad-friendly, and that’s hard. But yeah, there’s a lot of work that needs to be done on the engine, and consoles have a very small memory so, I mean there is a huge amount of work that needs to get done to bring an MMO from PC to PS3.”

PlanetSide 2 is being developed as a free-to-play PC title. There is no official word on whether it will head to console. For more read the full PlanetSide 2 interview.
