The popular PixelJunk Shooter games previously released for PS3 are being combined to create the new PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate for PS4 and PS Vita, Double Eleven has announced.

However, PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate should not be considered as merely a compilation of the twin-stick shooters, as the dev team has been working hard to make Ultimate stand alone as the third title in the series.

First off the new gameplay features introduced in the second game – such as super spin – can be used across both games, helping to merge the two titles into one uninterrupted experience.

The PS4 version also boasts a significant visual upgrade thanks to the introduction of real-time environment lighting, new FX for projectiles, explosions, thrusters and more. Fluids also look better thanks to an increased resolution of the particles, improved shaders and added anti-aliasing to the edges of the fluids. On top of all this there’s a revised colour palette and colour grading added to every scene.

In addition, all the action runs at 60 frames per second, as does the behind-the-scenes physics and fluid dynamics, which means the game promises to be more responsive to how the player interacts with the various environments.

The game’s ship has also been upgraded to a 3D model, making it possible to add animations for aeronautical manoeuvring and be impacted by the new real-time lighting.

Ultimate also boasts a more intuitive and informative HUD with a greater level of opacity to ensure screen real estate isn’t wasted, something the developer felt was particularly important with the PS Vita version.

The game also features a tweaked scoring system over the original games, which Double Eleven says should help balance the game for both newcomers and high score junkies.

The PS4 and Vita versions also support Cross Save, meaning you can start playing on PS4 then switch to Vita and pick up where you left off, and Cross Play, meaning a PS Vita and PS4 user can play together.

Look out for PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate this summer.
