Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford believes Blu-ray is just fine and we don’t need a new disc format, telling VideoGamer.com that “there’s plenty of space on there”. He also thinks that the industry isn’t currently demanding a new console generation.

“I mean, the PS3 has Blu-ray! We don’t need a new format,” said Pitchford. “Blu-ray is good, we’ll do it with Blu-ray. There’s plenty of space on there.”

On a broader scale, Pitchford doesn’t think the industry is demanding a new console generation like it was back when HD TVs were introduced and consoles weren’t really capable of making the most of them. Current consoles can display HD content just fine.

“Now we’re in year six, and we’re fine, because it’s not like we’ve got new TVs. The machine can do it. And it’s not just the Xbox, it’s the PlayStation 3,” commented Pitchford.

He added: “We’ve got HDMI, we’re good. We can render in 3D on these things, and nobody even has 3D TVs yet!”
