Bungie has just officially announced a mass layoff affecting its staff, with 220 roles eliminated. It says this is roughly “17% of [the] studio’s workforce.”
The announcement was posted on Bungie’s website, with CEO Pete Parsons heralding it.
Today is a difficult and painful day, especially for our departing colleagues, all of which have made important and valuable contributions to Bungie. Our goal is to support them with the utmost care and respect. For everyone affected by this job reduction, we will be offering a generous exit package, including severance, bonus and health coverage.
Bungie
It seems as though Bungie will make “substantial changes to [its] cost structure and focus development efforts entirely on Destiny and Marathon.”
Bungie has also said “roughly 12%” of staff have been integrated into SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) who acquired Bungie in 2022.
Despite the fact that Bungie has chosen to focus entirely on its two main projects (Destiny, Marathon) it has also said that they are “working with PlayStation Studios leadership to spin out one of [its] incubation projects – an action game set in a brand-new science-fantasy universe – to form a new studio within PlayStation Studios to continue its promising development.”
Beyond that, Bungie has also detailed how exactly it found itself in this position; essentially, Bungie was chasing too many projects at once, without much consideration and support structure for its two main projects.
This is a developing story, with more to follow.
